I'm a Joe Schmo. Jack of many trades, master of none. But I'm always learning about the few I'd like to try to master. People tell me I've had a colorful work experience from information technology to dolphin rescuing, mobile DJing, writing software, and a clinician in an electrophysiology lab (heart rhythms). Then I also have a number of hobbies and interests: cars, boats, diving, fishing, carpentry, beer, and physics.
When I was a kid, my parents divorced and I ultimately ended up living with my dad who was starting over with no credit and I suspect no savings. We lived in a sixty year old house with no insulation, no central air and heat, lawn furniture to sit on, and mattresses on the floor to sleep on. We had pinto beans and cornbread for dinner like it was a fancy meal (hey, I guess my dad had to make the best of a situation for me).
When something broke, we couldn't afford to pay someone to fix it. My dad had to fix it whether he really knew how or not. He was smart enough not only to figure out how to fix it, but fix it right. A lot of that confidence to tackle a project rubbed off on me. When I was 9, I was dropping a fuel tank out of an SUV. A year later, after being shown how to change a brake on one wheel of a car, I did the rest on my own. I'd take apart toys and put them back together. I love to see how things work. Perhaps that's why I went into the medical field: I see the body as a machine and how the parts work with each other.
When someone tells me they're going to tackle, for example, a home improvement project and ask me how it's done, providing I've done it, I am happy to offer advice and share how I did it. I do this a lot. So I've set out to start a blog and perhaps help others I don't know. I've done projects mundane as installing laminate floors, nifty stuff like putting power steering on a Jeep, and geeky stuff like setting up a media server for my home. I like things cost effective and reliable. So check back. I'll make a special effort to take pictures and illustrate what I'm doing.
